Honoring Dr. Tracy Weimer

For 15 years, Dr. Tracy Weimer taught West Virginia University students, residents and fellows to provide high-quality, compassionate care for patients with epilepsy and other neurological issues. Yet – unbeknownst to most of her students and patients, and even some of her colleagues – Dr. Weimer quietly battled breast cancer for 13 years and metastatic disease for more than 8 years.

Dr. Weimer passed away in early July 2021, after exhausting all of her treatment options. As a tribute, we invite those she has touched to honor her outstanding courage and commitment amid challenging circumstances. Your gift to the Dr. Tracy Weimer Legacy Fund will build upon her impressive professional legacy at the WVU School of Medicine and Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI).

As medical director of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), Dr. Weimer was instrumental in maintaining WVU Medicine’s Level IV Epilepsy Center designation, which reflects RNI’s comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with epilepsy. Throughout her cancer journey, Dr. Weimer remained a dedicated educator, clinician, mentor and friend, with a bravery and fortitude that were unmatched. In fact, she was one of the most clinically productive faculty members within the Department of Neurology. Her strong work ethic, positive attitude, friendly nature and willingness to provide advice made her an invaluable resource for residents and colleagues alike.

“Dr. Weimer was an inspiration to me and everyone with whom she interacted,” Dr. David Watson, chair of the Department of Neurology, said. “Her quiet and unassuming manner, mixed with her excellence in clinical neurology, sometimes made me forget what she was dealing with. Our department, our school and our state are better for having the opportunity to work with, learn from and be cared for by Tracy.”

The first $15,000 raised will go toward renovation of the EMU workroom, which will be dedicated in Dr. Weimer’s name. Additional monies raised will support a scholarship endowment to benefit medical students who have overcome significant adversity to proceed with their education.

Please consider a gift to help us pay tribute to Dr. Weimer and let her family know how much her courage and commitment have meant to you.

Faculty and staff can also make a gift via payroll deduction to the Dr. Tracy Weimer Legacy Fund (2W1555). Please click here to sign up.
