Health Sciences & Technology Academy Summer Camps
Who We Are
The Health Sciences & Technology Academy, known as HSTA, is a one-of-a-kind mentoring program in the state of West Virginia that helps participating high school students enter and succeed in STEM-based undergraduate and graduate degree programs. HSTA marshals the efforts of hundreds of mentors―teachers, community members, higher-education faculty and staff, and the HSTA participants themselves―through a framework that supports students facing social and financial challenges to obtaining a diploma and moving on to college.
Our Mission And Project Goal
Our mission is to increases the number of African American and other underrepresented students in West Virginia who pursue degrees in health sciences and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors, thereby increasing the number of health practitioners and advocates in the medically underserved communities of West Virginia.
During summer camp HSTA students spend a week (or three, if they are a senior) taking classes, attending workshops, going on field trips, making friends, and having fun. Students get to experience what it's like to live on a college campus, learn skills they need for college, and get to know HSTA students from other parts of the state.
- Incoming freshmen will attend Marshall University this July at Fun with Science Camp! Students will be engaged in a number of activities that teach basic science skills, engineering, math and critical thinking.
- Rising sophomores will attend Glenville State College where they will be immersed in a week long forensics experience.
- Rising juniors will attend West Virginia University at Biomed Camp! Students will be in different groups to have an in-depth experience with various faculty members. Topics range from public health to zebra fish!
- Rising seniors will attend West Virginia University for three weeks! Through this mini college experience they will earn four free college credits in Statistics and Service Learning.
“What I love most about this HSTA Summer camp is that it was fun. I had learned a lot of things that I didn't even know I would remotely think I could ever understand. This is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I met a lot of new friends and multiple people that can help me on my journey through college and life.”
- Senior Camp
“It has giving me a lot of choices for careers for the future. It is a really good program and I'm really glad I'm in it.”
