Who We Are
The West Virginia Family Nutrition Program (FNP) is funded by the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) and Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). The mission of FNP is to provide children and adults with the nutrition knowledge and skills needed to eat healthy on a limited budget. The program employs educators in almost every county in the state to carry out this work. Educators teach classes or groups of students at a variety of sites including schools, daycares, summer camps, drug recovery centers, day report and work site training. In addition to teaching individuals, educators work with partners in the community to improve access to healthy foods. At FNP, we believe every-one should have access to healthy, affordable food.
Our Cause
Many children struggle to access healthy foods through the summer. Existing food donation programs typically do not provide fruits and vegetables, nutrient rich foods needed to support healthy growth and development. This program will provide funding for children in low income areas to “shop” for produce this summer at kids farmers markets set up in conjunction with existing non-perishable food donation program. Each child at the market will receive $4 in tokens to purchase fruits and vegetables to go along with their non-perishable food bag. FNP educators provide cooking demonstrations, taste tests and recipes to children receiving the donation to ensure the food ends up on their plate and not in the trash.
