For my birthday this year, I’m asking for donations to WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital. I’ve chosen this nonprofit because their mission means a lot to me and I hope you’ll consider contributing as a way to celebrate the amazing patients that are treated their each day and the staff that support them.
On June 15, 1996, Cadence Journey Pierce made me a mother. Two weeks later, when she fell ill, she made me a fighter. Cadence was not predicted to live through that initial crisis at 14 days old. Under the superb care she received, she did survive. Despite the dire predictions that accompanied her condition, she also thrived. Cadence was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disease called Propionic Acidemia. She was the first, and still the only, child to ever be born in West Virginia and live to diagnosis. No one that cared for Cadence had ever seen this disease before, but that did not stop the world class care she received. Through the 20+ years Cadence was treated at WVUCH, we received more than we could ever pay back. Her doctors and nurses stood shoulder to shoulder with her dad and I and left no stone unturned nor mountain unmoved. We would not have had access to this world class care had it not been for fundraising efforts that took place before Cadence was even born, and I would not have had those extra 20 years with my daughter. It is my wish that the children being born now and in the future have continuing access to this level of care. WVU Children’s Hospital was a godsend for us all of these years, and all of our littlest Mountaineers deserve care close to home.
