Grow a beard. Make a Difference!

November is known nationwide for the month not to shave, especially during hunting season in West Virginia! This tradition, besides having an excuse to not shave, has by majority been underutilized. October is a huge success every year when it comes to breast cancer awareness, so why stop there? Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and you’d be hard pressed to find someone who has not been affected.

As a WVU medical student, it is an eye opener to see and hear of how many people are actually affected by cancer. But what is even more profound is the strength and heart that these individuals show in this lifelong battle and support they receive from their community and loved ones.

That is why I, along with my classmates, decided to mark this November as “Beards for Mountaineers”. Please join us in the fight against cancer by growing out those hedges!

For the month of November, forgo your normal shaving and grooming rituals, make a contribution to the cause and help raise money for the WVU Cancer Institute! 100% of the proceeds will be going to the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Fund at the WVU Cancer Institute Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center.  This fund is used to support the infrastructure necessary to manage clinical trials that are critically important in the development of new cancer treatments. Here’s some interesting facts on our Cancer Institute:

  • The WVU Cancer Institute offers nearly 100 clinical trials, many of which focus on the cancers common to residents of the Mountain State.

  • In 2015 more than 800 patients from West Virginia and the surrounding region participated in these promising research studies.

So let’s put down the razor – grow a beard and make a difference!

Let’s Go Mountaineers!

P.S. - Can’t grow a beard or your place of work doesn’t allow facial hair? Don’t worry, we encourage participation of any kind; grooming, trimming or donating in support of someone else are all accepted!
